A Guide To Choosing A Sapling From The Tree Nursery

Defined Tag:

Think of a tree nursery as an adoption home and you'll get a feel on how to properly care for the sapling you're planning to take home. You see, caring for a tree is more than merely selecting the best one you like among the choices presented at the tree nursery. Trees are living things too. They require a lot of care, and as their owners, we are responsible providing such care for them.

Hence, here are some guidelines on how to choose the right tree from the tree nursery and how you can help it adjust to its new home.

Selection Stage

Before deciding on which sapling to bring home, try to answer the following question:

* Will the tree fulfill your personal expectations?
* Will you be able to provide adequate space for the tree?
* Will there be adequate sunlight in the place you are reserving for the tree?
* Is the tree the right choice considering the environmental conditions in your community?
* Should you choose two different types from the same specie to ensure cross-pollination? Would you want them to reproduce, in the first place?
* Will the tree require a lot of effort and time for its maintenance? Are you up to the task?

If the answers to all the questions above are in favor of procuring the tree, then you can safely say that you have made a choice you will never regret. It's time to bring home the sapling from the tree nursery.

Planting/Transplanting The Tree

Once you get home, it is imperative that you don't plant your sapling immediately. Instead, dig a hole on the area where you want your tree to grow. The hole should be twice as wide and twice as deep as the sapling. Fill the hole with loose soil, no fertilizers. You may want to add a mixture of potting media to ensure the quality of the soil.

Now place the sapling on the hole. Allow it to remain there for a few days to a week to give it time to adapt to the new ecosystem around it. (Remember to water it.) Then remove from the pot or loosen and either remove or cut long slits in burlap if the tree is balled and burlapped. Carefully plant the tree in the prepared hole taking care to plant it at the same depth it was previously planted. Firm the soil by pressing your hands around the area where the roots are planted. Water regularly until roots have established.

Allow the sapling to adjust to its new home. Do not apply fertilizer for at least a quarter of the year.

Go through the usual process of caring for your new tree. Enjoy every single day as it grows into the sturdy structure it is meant to be.

They say that there is no poem as lovely as a tree. Well, the most beautiful portions of a poem are the tales of its humble beginnings.
